With regards to its iron ore project in the Nimba Mountains range (in Lola prefecture, Forest Guinea), the Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG) held consultations on the scoping study and Environmental, and SociaL impact Study reports at a hotel in Conakry.
The iron ore project of SMFG, a branch of High Power Exploration (HPX), owned by billionaire Robert Friedland, is located in the Nimba Mountains range, classified as a "world heritage site ." Therefore, mining activities in the area pose a significant challenge for environmental impact management. According to Paul Kimahévé GUILAGUI (advisor in charge of sustainable development issues), " The fact that the site is classified as a world heritage site means that any environmental assessment must rely on tools that Guinea has not developed. However, those tools exist at the international level, of which Guinea is a part."
The objective of the meeting was to allow participants to discuss the outline of the future environmental impact management plan that will "take into account all concerns." "We are here to assess the content and feasibility for the study to be conducted in a way that will not have adverse impacts on species and humans", said Abdoulaye Sano (in charge of Mining and Quaries at the Guinean Agency for Environmental Assessment).
It should be recalled that Société des Mines de fer de Guinée (SMFG) is owned up to 85% by High Power Exploration, through its Euronimba Limited branch.
